   Heelan was born in Andover (Massachusetts) to Kimball Heelan, actress and Lowell Public Schools teacher, and Kevin Heelan playwright. Conor is her older brother. His father is a professional dramatist who has been an instructor at the Phillips Andover Academy teacher since 1983. Heelan was a student at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts, and then spent an entire year at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Heelan moved to the University of Southern California. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2009. When she graduated, Heelan received the James B. Pendleton Award for outstanding contribution to the USC School of Dramatic Arts.
